COMMON ROOT CANAL SYMPTOMS
The root
canal is the channel that
connects from the root of the tooth up to
the crown or surface. Inside the canal are
blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue
which provides nourishment for the tooth during
growth and development. This inner core of
soft tissue is called the "pulp".
Once the tooth has fully matured, the pulp's
only function then is sensory - temperature,
touch, and pain.
If the tooth
begins to decay or get cracked, bacteria can
then infect the pulp and cause it to inflame.
Infected pulp makes
the blood flow more difficult and as a result
causes pain to develop inside the tooth.
When this happens, the tooth needs to undergo
a root canal
treatment or be removed. Leaving
the condition untreated can eventually spread
the infection to other tissue areas such as
around the eye or neck. Eventually, it could
lead to a serious medical emergency.

The
following events can be the precursor
to root canal symptoms and the need
for treatment:
- Tooth
Decay - As discussed
... the pulp inside the tooth will eventually
get infected from tooth decay. Bacteria
will infect and inflame the pulp causing
an abscess to form. Pain is the obvious
sign of diseased pulp as listed above and
needs to undergo a root canal treatment
or be extracted.
- Cracked
Tooth - A chipped
tooth caused by any accident or event may
expose the pulp to infection. The tooth
needs to be treated with a root canal procedure
or be removed.
- Periodontal
Disease - The pulp
can also get infected by bacteria from a
gum and bone infection surrounding the tooth
which is known as periodontal disease.
- Previous
Dental Procedures
- Other types of dental work can eventually
lead to pulpal damage. It may not be the
fault of the dentist but just unforeseen
problems or complications that later developed
or tried to be avoided. Once the pulp becomes
damaged and infected ... no matter the cause
... a root canal treatment or a tooth extraction
is necessary.
